BSA D7 Bantam, 175cc
If the IFL opened up my mind(just a little bit anyway), the Bantam opened up the world for me(well Europe in any case).
In the first place it got me to work and then on holiday.
I was lucky enough to be invited to visit some of the friends and their families made at the International club.I went there with my Bantam.
This is cheap travel and the motorbike had no problems finding a little place on the cross channel ferry and for a modest charge at that!
However the autonomy wasn't that big and I remember spending one night in a barn in the Champagne area of France waiting for the petrol station to open in the morning.
These machines were not as reliable as that, unfortunately, and required a bit of twiddling with. They had to be de-coked regularly, if not they would start knocking(on heaven's door).
Another problem was the flywheel, made of some alloy with magnets embedded in it to form part of the generator to charge the battery and generate the spark. It seemed to come to bits and needed to be replaced quite often.
But apart from that it would speed you along at a respectable 50 mph or so.
This was heaven!

This photo of myself was taken in 1962 in the Chelmsford road at Blackmore.
