FLASHBACK
In the sixties, we were a bit idealistic, I suppose, and the ideas prevailing at the time were peace, love and understanding between peoples. Don't forget we are in the times of segregation in the US, apartheid in South Africa and nuclear weapon testing in the atmosphere by the US, GB, USSR and F. The colonies were not yet independent. So there was a lot of progress to be made.
We had just left school and were starting out on our professional lives. Most of us were just 16 and almost everything was yet to discover.
So if you get a chance to participate in a club where at least half of the people come from overseas, you don't hesitate for long. Especially if you have hardly set a foot outside your county before!
This club was the IFL and my introduction was by a fellow Marconi apprentice Steve. You may know who I mean. He may read this one day. If you do Steve, what can I say but thanks!

The weekly meeting was held every Friday night in a sort of wooden assembly hall which was close to, and was owned by the cathedral. Let me say straight away that there were no religious aims at all in our society, and people from all cultures and religions were all welcome. It was not a talking point. Our aims were simply to get to know each other and to enjoy ourselves. This building no longer exists.
Most nights of the week there was an activity: tenpin bowling at Southend, horse riding at Great Easter, composing and printing the weekly newsletter, going to the White Hart folk club and anything else we could think of.
Saturdays generally someone organised a party and Sunday afternoons there would be a walk in the countryside.
Every year was organised a trip to Snowdon in Wales, I don't know why: it was a sort of tradition!

If any ex-members read this, why not leave a few words in the guest book, or a private message is possible too.
There is the first of 7 photo albums here where you can see some of us and our meetings. The quality of the photos is poor, I'm afraid, but they have survived 40 years or more! Some of these dear friends are no longer with us and I'm sorry if I might cause pain to any surviving relatives!
