The Marconi
years(1961-1973)1. 1961-Après l'école, vient le travail/After school comes work.
| L'école
est
obligatoire jusqu'à 16 ans en Angleterre. A cet âge, il y a un
tas d'examens à passer. Pour moi c'était les GCEs niveaux
'O' et je ne m'en suis pas trop mal tiré, assez pour envisager
un travail intéressant dans un usine de notre bonne ville de
Chelmsford. Étant donné le faible niveau de vie de la
famille, il était hors de question de rester à
l'école pour faire des études d'entrée à
l'université. Donc après consultation de l'office
d'emploi des jeunes, j'ai postulé pour un travail d'apprenti
technicien en électronique chez Marconi
Télécommunications avec succès. Cette acceptation était pour moi une chance énorme et a conditionné ma vie, je suppose, mais chaque choix qu'on fait a son importance. L'apprentissage a duré 6 ans et pour moi il s'est déroulé de la façon suivante:- ..un an à temps complet au collège technologique d'Essex du nord à Colchester, ensuite 4 ans dans différentes sections de fabrication, test, développement et recherche de Marconi. Pendant ces 4 ans, il y avait de la formation continue 1 jour par semaine et trois soirées par semaine au collège. La dernière année s'est déroulée au collège technologique d'Essex central à Chelmsford. Après chaque année il y avait des examens et à la fin un diplôme professionnel en poche. Travailler pour Marconi était un honneur pour moi et on était conscient du fait que le fondateur de notre société était Guglielmo Marconi lui-même, celui qui avait tant fait pour l'invention et la promotion de la radio. A cause de la renommée de Marconi, les places d'apprentis étaient très prisées et je me suis trouvé avec des jeunes hommes (et une femme) venant de partout en Grande Bretagne et même de plusieurs autres pays ( la Jordanie et les Bahamas par exemple). Ceci était pour moi un facteur libérateur dans ma vie personnelle, mais j'aurai l'occasion d'en parler une autre fois. Les années Marconi- 2 |

School is
compulsory until 16 in England. At that age, there are a load of exams
to take: the GCE 'O' levels at the time. I didn't do too badly so
I could consider a reasonable job in
one of the factories in our good town of Chelmsford. Because of our low
living standards in the family, it was out of the question to stay at
school to study for 'A' levels to go into university! So after an
interview with the youth employment officer, I applied to become a
technical apprentice with the Marconi Company and was accepted. This acceptance was a great opportunity for me and has largely conditioned my life, I suppose, but all the choices we make have their importance. The apprenticeship lasted 6 years for me and was carried out in the following way:- ..one year complete at North-east Essex Technical college at Colchester, then 4 years in various sections of production, test, design and development of the company. During these four years one day and three evenings at college. The last year was once again a full year at the Mid-Essex Technical college at Chelmsford. At the end of each year there were exams and on completion the IEE professional certificate was awarded. Working for Marconi was for me an honour and we were all well aware that the founder of our company was none other than Guglielmo Marconi himself, he who had done so much for the invention and promotion of radio. Because the company was renowned, the places for apprenticeships were sought after and I found myself with young men(and 1 women) from all over Britain and even some from overseas ( Jordan and the Bahamas for example). This for me was a great liberating factor in my personal life, but I will have plenty of time to talk about that later. The Marconi years - 2 |
