| Joan was perhaps
the first folk singer
I became aware of in the sixties when I started to take an interest in
the folk scene. It seemed as if she had allways been there. She had
this perfect voice: clear and intense when necessary or soft and
intimate when the song needed that mood. And with that little vibrato
that gave her the sound of a real opera singer. She hit her notes spot
on and it sounded great! These songs could be simple little folk songs
or more serious poems put to music. The first record of hers I bought in 1965 was 'Farewell Angelina". It had of course those first Bob Dylan songs including 'It's all over baby blue' and aven a song in french: 'Pauvre Ruteboeuf' which I would hear again later sung by Leo Ferre when I came to live in France. There was something modern about this record. This wasn't the quiet folksong singing girl but the engaged woman who had something to say. |

là. Elle avait cette voix parfaite: claire et intense quand il en y

d'une chanteuse d'opéra. Elle chantait ses notes justes et sa
performance était magnifique! Ces chansons pouvait être
des petites chansons folkloriques ou bien un poème
sérieux pour lequelle on avait composé de la musique. Le premier disque que j'ai acheté en 1965 était 'Farewell Angelina'. Il y avait toutes ces premières chansons de Bob Dylan, y compris 'It's all over now baby blue', et même une chanson en français, 'Pauvre Ruteboeuf', que j'entendrais plus tard chantée par Léo Ferré quand j'habiterais en France. Ce disque était moderne, et Joan n'était pas une petite fille qui chantait ses petites chansons folkloriques, mais une femme engagée qui avait quelque chose à dire. |
| In 1967 came 'Joan', another record
that I loved and wanted to own. Every song is inspiring: that is rare
on a record! Two of Tim Hardin's songs are there: 'If you were a
carpenter' and 'The Lady came from Baltimore' and the Paul Simon song
'Dangling conversation' is also present. Along came Joan's collection of Bob Dylan songs in1968: 'Any Day Now', which combined the talents of two outstanding artists. |

encore un disque que j'adorais et voulais posséder. Chaque
chanson était une inspiration: ce qui est rare sur un disque! Il
y avait deux chansons de Tim Hardin: 'If you were a
carpenter' et 'The Lady came from Baltimore' et en plus la chanson de
Paul Simon 'Dangling Conversation'. Une collection de chansons de Bob Dylan', 'Any Day Now', est sortie en 1968 qui combinait les talents de deux artistes exceptionnels. |

& Rust' came in 1975. Decidedly more 'rock' or
'country'. But Joan is not a singer that should be put into a category:
she can do it all! Once again every track is superb on this record. This was Joan the accomplished performer a woman who had become definitively part of the history of modern popular music as a result of many live performances all over the world and twenty or so records. |

'country'. Mais Joan n'est pas une chanteuse qu'on doit mettre dans une
catégorie: elle peut tout faire! Encore une fois, toutes les
pistes de ce disque sont superbes! Là il y avait Joan la chanteuse accomplie, une femme qui avait rejoint définitivement l'histoire de la musique populaire moderne grâce à ses nombreux concerts partout dans le monde et une vingtaine de disques. |

soft, simple, back to grass roots, in a word: honest! This 'no frills'
record has just a guitar, a piano or a chorus backing. This is the
essence of Joan Baez! In the same year a compilation, 'The Joan Baez Country Music Album', was also released. Who said she isn't country? |

honnête. Un disque sans artifices, simplement une guitare ou un
piano avec, de temps en temps, des choeurs. Ceci est l'essence de Joan
