| One of my best souvenirs of
childhood is when I was 12ish, I had a big adults bicycle for
Christmas( I remember it was a Rayleigh Palm beach). This was fantastic
for me because it enabled me to travel: I could get 15 or 20 miles from
home, and living in a small village( Blackmore in Essex), it
meant I could get as far as some bigger towns like Billericay( and it's boating
lake) or Shenfield(with
it's railway station). In both cases I had to use a big main road, the A12. Now this was a
big road, and it carried a lot of international traffic, coming from
the docks of Harwich, Felixstowe:
people coming from Holland and the Scandinavian countries as well as
plenty of lorry drivers. What do drivers do, or a lot of them in any
case? Well they smoke. And what do they litter the roadside with? Empty
cigarette and match boxes. So I picked them up and started a
collection. I was not the only one apparently, because there are plenty
of internet sites on the subject. My own collection? Well I don't know what happened to it! But check out

Un de mes meilleurs souvenirs
d'enfance est quand j'avais douze ans environ, mes parents m'ont
donné un vélo pour Noël( un Palm beach de Rayleigh). Pour moi, c'était
fantastique: ça m'a permis de voyager. Je pouvais m'éloigner d'une
vingtaine de kilomètres de la maison.Habitant un petit village, Blackmore en Essex, je
pouvais atteindre Billericay(
et son petit lac) ou Shenfield(avec
sa gare de chemin de fer). Dans tous les cas, j'ai dû emprunter l'A12. Celle-ci était
une route importante en provenance des docks de Harwich et Felixstowe:
transportant des gens de Hollande et des pays scandinaves ainsi que des
routiers. Qu'est-ce que font les conducteurs, ou beaucoup,
d'entre eux en tout cas? Ils fument. Et que jettent-ils? Des boîtes
vides d'allumettes et cigarettes. Alors je les ramassais et les
collectionnais. Je n'étais pas le seul, apparemment, car on trouve
plein de sites à ce sujet, sur l'internet. Ma collection? Je ne sais
