I have fond memories of Sunday and Thursday evenings spent here, but I've been trying to find some traces of it, but this is not easy as the building was destroyed in the late 60's to make way for the Chelmer High shopping complex. This act was considered by many as a crime since a good slice of Chelmsford's history was also destroyed as one side of Tindal street was no longer. The White Hart hotel and several other pubs in the street had been "coaching inns", and through the big doors that led into the rear yards one could see the stables that had once received the horses that pulled the stage coaches. J'ai des souvenirs affectueux pour ce
lieu où j'ai passé beaucoup de soirées les jeudis et dimanches.Je
voulais en trouver des traces sur internet, mais c'est très difficile
car le bâtiment était rasé à la fin des années 60 avec la moitié droite
de la rue pour permettre la construction d'un complexe de magasins, le
' CHELMER HIGH '. Cet acte est considéré comme un crime parce que d'un
seul coup de bulldozer, on a fait disparaître une bonne partie de
l'histoire de la ville. L'hôtel le ' White Hart ' et plusieurs autres
pubs dans la rue avaient été des postes de ravitaillement pour les
diligences et on pouvait encore voir les étables à travers les portes cochères.

Street Chelmsford A little bit more about the Folk Club. Sundays was guest night and was animated by Dave Moran who was lead singer of the resident group called 'The Halliard'. I've found something on the internet in Noel Murphy's diary. Dave was also editor of a folk
songs magazine 'FOLK SCENE', and I still have a few 1966 copies ( I'll
try and reproduce a few pages so keep looking). Thursday was singers
night where everyone was invited to sing.
To get to the club you had to go into the yard and enter the side door of the White Hart, after which you went up the back stairs and into a fair-sized room. The ambiance was jovial and everyone joined in singing especially those Irish rebel songs: there was a strong Irish nurse contingent from Broomfield and London road hospitals. We had some great evenings and met loads of interesting people AND heard some great singers who were some already famous, and others who would become so. Others who were never heard of again! |

Un peu plus sur le 'Folk Club'. Dimanche soir c'était pour les invités. L'animateur était Dave Moran qui était chanteur du group résident 'The Halliard'. J'ai trouvé ceci sur le 'net dans l'agenda de Noel Murphy. Dave était éditeur du magazine 'FOLK SCÈNE', et j'ai encore quelques numéros( J'essaierai de reproduire quelques pages; donc regardez cet espace). Jeudi soir tout le monde pouvait chanter. Pour arriver au club, il fallait
entrer dans le cours, passer par la porte du coté et monter les
escaliers pour arriver finalement dans une salle assez grande.
L'ambiance était 'bon enfant' et tout le monde chantait spécialement
des chansons rebelles Irlandaises: il y avait une forte présence
d'infirmières Irlandaises en provenance des hôpitaux de Broomfield et
de 'London road'. Nous y avons passés des soirées magnifiques et
écoutés des chanteurs vedettes ou qui allaient le devenir, ou bien
d'autres qui serraient vite oubliés!

J'avais de la chance d'être parmi ceux qui ont vu Paul au Folk Club de Chelmsford en 1964.Pas grand monde le connaissais à cette époque,moi non plus!
