Part one
My brother, who is 6 years older than me, was already interested in radio and electronics. So I became interested too.
One day he brought home a nice crystal set made of Bakelite with a shiny dial with the frequencies graved on it, and brass terminals to connect the aerial, earth and headphones.
Next to our little bungalow at Blackmore in Essex were a couple of willow trees about 30 of 40 feet high. These were ideal for fixing our aerial onto by means of a porcelain insulator. So there we were with a large stone or lump of wood trying to sling our long bit of copper wire as high up into the tree that we could, hoping that it wouldn't fall on our heads or on the greenhouse nearby.
To finish off the electrical circuit, a good earth was necessary and a steel rod about 3 foot long hammered into the ground next to the window was perfect. The aerial and earth were connected to the crystal set.
To finish it off now you just had to connect up some high impedance headphones (2000 ohms) and away it went! No switch to turn on, no batteries to connect just adjust the electrode on the crystal and the position of the tuning dial and several of the stronger stations could be easily heard.
The real miracle was at night when  you could hear loads of different stations including quite a few foreign ones.
This was already a window open on the world and the beginning of an adventure that carries on even now!
